The Penn State University Dance Marathon, more commonly known as THON, is used to raise money for the Four Diamonds Fund, a charity also run by Penn State, which is dedicated to supporting the children, families and research associated with pediatric cancer.
Childhood cancers are the #1 disease killer in the United States, more than asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined.
Although up to 75% of children with cancer have the potential to be cured, 2,300 children and teens still die from cancer each year.
THON Weekend is a yearly 46 hour no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon in February to raise money and spread awareness of childhood cancers. It is the largest student-run philanthropy in world, ran 100% by student volunteers.
In 2014 THON raised $13.34 million and was able to donate 96% of those funds directly to the Four Diamonds charity. They had 700+ dancers representing 600+ organizations.
