Sundance Vacations employees from a variety of offices teamed up this past October to help the Family Promise of Carbon County, Pennsylvania renovate a donated house.

After the passing of a local woman’s sister, she donated the Lansford home to Family Promise. The double house has two livable parts, making it the perfect place to help multiple families in need.

Sundance Vacations co-founder, Tina Dowd, is on the board for Family Promise and helped secure the closing costs and legal documentation for the $45K house. When she expressed interest in her employees lending a hand fixing the home, a fellow Family Promise supporter and Sundance Vacations employee volunteered to organize the repairs.

Denise Miller, Sundance Vacations General Manager, reached out to employees close to Lansford at our Tamaqua and Hazleton marketing offices. She tells us she was thrilled with the response she received!

Six Sundance Vacations employees and some of their family or friends joined in to get the house ready for inspection and for its ultimate purpose, to use as a home for those in need.

The twelve person crew tackled one half of the home first: sanding, spackling, painting, and even doing electrical work like wiring, installing outlets and smoke detectors. One Sundance Vacations Tamaqua employee’s husband works at Lowes and even was able to get many of the supplies donated.

After about a month of work, the team completed all necessary modifications, in about half the time they had originally anticipated.

All their time and effort paid off, because the fixed up space became the new home of a local single mother of four on October 25, 2016!

Miller, who just recently became a member of Family Promise, tells us she couldn’t be more thrilled to see a happy family moving in and wanted to thank everyone involved.

“Not only did they volunteer time, but many of the items used to renovate and clean were donated by them as well!” Miller said, “The house is beautiful and a family will now make it a home…I can envision all the kids running down those stairs Christmas morning!”

In addition to completing one side of the house, Family Promise members plan to renovate the second side soon to create a space for transitional women. The living area will serve as a temporary home for homeless, single women as they pursue careers.
